It is amazing what kind of conversations can get started to Twitter. If you pick a provocative subject to tweet about you get to see how many people pick up on what you are saying. This happened to me recently. I have been thinking about all the Federal Government has done to try to stimulate the economy. I have been amazed that there has been very little offered to small business. You may already be aware that small businesses employ America, not big business. To understand just how many small businesses employ Americans I visited the Census website and looked at the most recent results which were from 2004. I was shocked. There are 2,777,680 businesses in America that employ 1-4 employees! That is more than all the businesses employing 5 or more employees in the US! While the answer seems simple, it really isn't but if these small businesses were able to employee one more person they would be able to replace the 2.6 million jobs lost in 2008 and then some.
I took this Tweet out to Twitter and this is what came of it.
Greg Hyer - Did you know more businesses in the US employ 1-4 people than the total of businesses that employ 5-500 people?
Greg Hyer - Imagine if those 1-4 employee businesses could hire one more person. That would make 2,777,680 more jobs!
Helen Yoest - @LinkingRaleigh YES I DID There needs to be a new name for small business!
Greg Hyer - @GWConfidence What do you think the new name for small business should be?
Helen Yoest - @LinkingRaleigh Then we would be called "Mighty Businesses"
Greg Hyer - @GWConfidence I like it! "Mighty businesses. The backbone of America."
Helen Yoest - @LinkingRaleigh We should start a 12 step program for sucessful a Mighty Business.
Helen Yoest - @LinkingRaleigh Step 1, Project the Power of One! Don't worry about pretending to be big, you are big!
Greg Hyer - @GWConfidence Step 2, Realize that your customers will play "follow the leader" if you can get them to want to follow.
Helen Yoest - @LinkingRaleigh Step 3, Always say "We" even if you are a company of one.
Greg Hyer - @GWConfidence Step 4, Believe of Spiritual Capitalism. Integrity & commitment are as important as profit & efficiency. http://bit.ly/QiwX4
Helen Yoest - @LinkingRaleigh Step 5 Don't promise something you can't deliver.
Greg Hyer - @GWConfidence Step 6. If you do not enjoy what you do, re-evaluate your business and get back to basics. Try to find the love!
Helen Yoest - @LinkingRaleigh Step 7 charge a fee that the market bares, not proportional to size of your biz
Greg Hyer - @GWConfidence Step 8. Never be too proud to ask for help if you feel you need it.
Helen Yoest - @LinkingRaleigh Step 9 Align yourself with others to complement what you do. Be ready to recommend someone when a client asks.
Greg Hyer - @GWConfidence Step 10. Family comes first. You need to support them as much as you need their support.
Helen Yoest - @LinkingRaleigh Step 11. Brand yourself. Coke can do it, so can you.
Greg Hyer - @GWConfidence Step 12 Become your customer's biggest asset. You should improve their business or life & in return it will improve yours.
